Physical Education contributes to the life and physical, mental and social wellbeing of all our students and staff at Levenshulme High school.

The Faculty of Physical Education comprises five teachers. In addition, we may be supported by other qualified staff and coaches in the delivery of the extensive range of extra-curricular clubs on offer to our pupils. Indoor facilities for PE in the Energy Box comprises of a four court badminton sports hall, a fully equipped fitness suite, a multi-purpose room, and a designated PE classroom. Outdoor facilities include two playing fields, an astro-turf and daily mile track.

All students receive two lessons a week as part of their core curriculum entitlement as two single lessons in a week. In addition, students are invited to attend clubs on a varied extra-curricular programme taking place before school, lunch time or after school free of charge. We are committed to providing competitive and leadership opportunities for all girls in a variety of sports.

There is also a comprehensive programme of community activities on offer in the Energy Box, during the evenings and at weekends. Students are encouraged by staff to attend clubs and activities outside of school hours within the community.


PE Kit Expectations

Students are required to wear plain blue or black track suit bottoms or leggings, Levenshulme PE t-shirt and Levenshulme PE jumper for their PE lessons. Students will need a pair of suitable sports trainers that can be worn inside and outside on the field.

Topics Covered

Years 7 – 9

Students will develop practical ability in sport specific techniques and skills. They will also develop teamwork, communication and a range of interpersonal and employability skills that will aid them school and later life. Throughout the 5 years students will develop their knowledge and understanding of healthy active lifestyles and wellbeing to ensure they can make good lifestyle choices in the future.

Assessment

Students are continually assessed by their PE teachers during lessons and clubs; they are formally assessed at the end of every term. Students are kept informed of how they are working within practical activities through half term reports and regular feedback from their PE teachers. Students are assessed across 6 strands of the healthy active lifestyle assessment criteria (Leadership/Coaching, practical performance, knowledge of theory, decision making, mind-set and fitness/healthy lifestyles). Students go on a PE journey throughout their 5 years as each strand has 6 levels (bronze, silver, gold, platinum, crystal and diamond).

Students are actively encouraged to attend extra-curricular activities, in order to enhance their practical skills, improve their physical, mental and social wellbeing and form healthy habits for life.

Progression routes and linked careers

To be able to study ‘A’ Level PE at college; to work in the health and fitness or sports industry; first step to becoming a PE teacher, sports coach, fitness instructor, physiotherapist, sport psychologist, sport scientist, sports analyst, and sports journalism.

Other Information

Pupils who opt for GCSE PE or Cambridge Nationals Sport Studies must be prepared to participate in extra-curricular activities in order to enhance their practical grades.
