Student s receiving their runners up award at the Callsign Digital Defender’s Challenge in January 2026

Callsign Digital Defender’s Challenge ( Published: 11/02/2026)

Our Year 10 Future Me Leaders were selected to take part in the Digital Defenders Challenge, organised by StateTalking and Callsign.

Online life offers fantastic opportunities, but it also carries risks. From signing up to apps and keeping accounts secure, to protecting people from scams, there are significant challenges that cyber security companies like Callsign work to address every day.

The students’ specific challenge focused on account takeover – how to ensure that the person logging in is truly the legitimate account owner. They were encouraged to explore themes such as fraud, security, and identity. Their app was called ShieldX – the first line of defence.

Working in teams, students designed an app with a creative and practical solution. Although the app did not need to be fully built, it needed to feel realistic and be clearly explained to someone outside the room.

The team was invited to the Home Cinema to take part in the challenge, competing against four other schools from Manchester. They also had the opportunity to meet tech mentors who formed part of the judging panel. Our team achieved a runners-up position and should be very proud of themselves.

Our Year 10 students were creative, articulate, and passionate, confidently sharing their ideas throughout the event. The experience helped them develop key employability skills such as problem-solving, collaboration, communication, and resilience – skills that will benefit them well beyond the classroom.

It improved my public speaking skills and helped me gain confidence when presenting in front of an audience.
A Year 10 student

The challenge provided students with a valuable opportunity to expand their knowledge of STEM careers, and gain insight into the real-world challenges cyber security companies face, including fraud, scams, and online safety.
