‘Futures for All’ Career Talk ( Published: 27/01/2026)
The talk was delivered by guest speaker, Anne Morris, who shared her journey from teaching to entrepreneurship.
Anne is a former secondary-level Maths teacher who founded Yipiyap in 2012, delivering in-school peer tuition to schools and colleges. During the talk, she explained how her classroom experience helped her identify a need for peer-led support, and how it inspired her to develop a successful education business.
After more than a decade leading the development of the in-school tuition sector, Yipiyap was appointed as one of only 65 Tuition Partners to the National Tutoring Programme, the government’s flagship initiative to support students following the Covid-19 pandemic. More recently, Yipiyap has moved away from in-person tuition to offer a range of digital services, including Peerscroller for PSHE/Personal Development and Yipiyap Aspire: Train to Tutor, both delivered through schools and colleges.
A key focus of the talk was the importance of work experience, with students encouraged to take opportunities wherever possible to build skills, confidence, and knowledge of the working world. Anne also highlighted how persistence, resilience, and hard work played a vital role in her success, emphasising that setbacks can be valuable learning experiences.
Sharing my story as an entrepreneur with learners at Levenshulme High School was an absolute privilege. I’m always happy to talk about the ups and downs of starting a business with young people because, when they see an established business, they never see all the challenges along the way that made it what it is. It’s so important to know that learning from mistakes is what moves everything forward! They asked some great questions as well about how I got started and what motivates me to keep going every day.
I was also happy to give some tips about how to make the most of their upcoming work experience and I hope they have confidence to go in really positively and make the most of this valuable opportunity.
Anne Morris, reflecting on the session
The talk was engaging and insightful for our students, helping them to understand the entrepreneurial journey in a real and relatable way. The emphasis on gaining work experience, alongside learning how challenges and setbacks can help you grow and come back stronger, was particularly valuable.
